John Fox, who spent the past nine seasons as the Carolina Panthers head coach, is named coach of the Denver Broncos. Team VP John Elway makes the announcement via Twitter.

John Elway is really taking to this Twitter phenomenon.

When Elway, the Denver Broncos newly named executive vice president of football operations, decided to hire John Fox as the team’s new head coach, he didn’t make the announcement in a news release or press conference. He went right to Twitter.

“I am excited to announce that John Fox has agreed to terms to become the 14th head coach in Denver Broncos history,” tweeted Elway, who opened his account on Twitter last week.

In subsequent tweets, Elway called Fox a “dynamic and proven leader who will energize our entire organization” and added, “John has coached great defenses, turned teams around and been to Super Bowls.”

Fox, 55, spent the past nine seasons as coach of the Carolina Panthers. His contract was not renewed in a cost-cutting move by team owner Jerry Richardson.

Fox had a 73-71 record with the Panthers but was 2-14 this season when it was assumed he would not be returning.

“I am very thankful to (owner) Pat Bowlen and John Elway for giving me the opportunity to coach a football team with such a proud tradition,” Fox said in a statement. “The Broncos have a culture of winning, and I am excited to continue that legacy.”
