Amid rumors they wanted Michael Vick to pull out of his appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," the Eagles say they supported him decision to appear. So why did Vick cancel?

Like everyone else, we were all set to watch Michael Vick’s appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” next week, mostly because we wanted to see how long it would take the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback to shed a few tears and show his remorse for his dogfighting transgressions.

But sadly, it’s not going to happen. Vick cancelled/postponed his appearance, offering no credible explanation.

There were rumors that Vick feared an ambush by animal support groups who wanted to confront him with some of the dogs he once owned that have since been rehabilitated. Then there was the suggestion that the Eagles had pressured Vick to pull out of the interview, perhaps because they feared it might turn into a public relations failure.

“Not true,” an Eagles spokesman said Thursday, according to Sports Daily.

Chris Shigas, a spokesman for Vick, said, “The Eagles were supportive of Michael's decision both when he agreed to do the show and when he decided to cancel.”

Earlier Thursday, Fox 29 in Philadelphia reported that the team had requested that Vick cancel the interview, which would have aired Feb. 24.

In a statement, Vick didn’t offer much more than this: “After careful consideration, I will need to postpone the taping of the Oprah Winfrey interview scheduled for Feb. 22. I admire and respect Oprah and hope to be able to participate in an interview in the future.”

Whether Vick eventually appears on the show is doubtful. It’s likely he was hoping a positive appearance might improve his chances of recovering some of the endorsements he lost following his imprisonment for financing a dogfighting operation. It’s also possible he realized nothing good could come from the interview since many viewers would have continued to view him skeptically.

Either way, we’ll never know.
