There may have been doubts about Leon Washington's ability to come back from a horrific leg injury in 2009, but he put them to rest with a breakout season for the Seahawks. Now he'll be rewarded with a four-year deal.

The Seattle Seahawks haven’t made it official yet, but Leon Washington’s agent has. Alvin Keels, who represents Washington, tweeted Tuesday his client and the Seahawks have agreed in principal to a new four-year deal.

Washington’s career was in doubt last season after he suffered a compound fracture of the tibia and fibula in his right leg while playing for the New York Jets against the Oakland Raiders in October 2009. He was traded to the Seahawks in a draft day deal last year.

There were plenty of doubts whether Washington, 28, could make a successful return as a kick and punt return specialist, but he did, averaging 25.6 yards on 57 kickoff returns with a league-leading three touchdowns and a career best of 101 yards against the San Diego Chargers in Week 3. His average ranked eighth in the NFL.

Washington also had an 11.3 average on 22 punt returns and rushed for 100 yards and one touchdown on 27 carries.

He finished second to the Chicago BearsDevin Hester in voting for All-Pro kick returner.

The Seahawks said any deal involving the team and Washington was not yet official. We can assume it will be as soon as the contract is signed.
