Saints cut Jonathan Stinchcomb

The New Orleans Saints cut former Pro Bowl offensive tackle Jonathan Stinchcomb, the team announced.

Stinchcomb was released to clear a path for younger linemen Charles Brown and Zach Strief to compete for the right tackle vacancy. Strief is regarded as the favorite to win the job

A former Saints' Man of the Year, Stinchcomb was drafted in the second round of the 2003 NFL draft and made the Pro Bowl in 2009 and started in the Super Bowl for New Orleans, Stinchcomb, 31, had started 80 consecutive games.

"We as an organization have the utmost respect for Jon and all that he has worked so hard to accomplish during his career," Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said. "He's exemplified professionalism, both on the field and in our community and been an outstanding player, teammate and mentor to many of our younger players. We respect the efforts and professionalism he brought to our team."

Added Saints coach Sean Payton: "Jon has epitomized what we have tried to accomplish here with our program. This was a decision that we spent a lot of time on and not something taken lightly at all. I can tell you that everyone in this organization has a ton of respect for him. Again, it was a difficult decision. He's been a big part of the past five seasons here." Recommended Stories
