Dallas Cowboys first-round offensive tackle Tyron Smith hyperextended his knee and could be sidelined for the season opener against the New YOrk Jets. The former USC standout hasn't been ruled out yet, though, because no structural damage was found when a magnetic resonance imaging exam was conducted, according to ESPN Dallas.

Meanwhile, starting cornerback Mike Jenkins hurt his knee Wednesday. However,Jenkins is also deal with nerve damage to his neck that sidelined him for the entire preseason.

"There are different challenges that we all face every day," Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. "If any of these guys aren't able to play, hopefully the backups understand the value of their opportunity and we can move right along."

The Cowboys will start Jermey Parnell if Smith is out. With Terence Newman out with a groin injury, the Cowboys would turn to Alan Ball to start opposite Orlando Scandrick if Jenkins is out.
