Sean Payton has successful surgery

After breaking his leg and tearing his lateral meniscus in his left knee, New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton underwent successful surgery to repair the damage. The team announced the surgery by Dr. Deryk Jones and Dr. Misty Suri took place today and took three hours with Payton remaining overnight in the hospital for observation.

Payton didn't have any surgeries during his playing career, but got hurt in a collision with Saints tight end Jimmy Smith during the first quarter against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"The surgery went very well," Jones said in a statement. "We plan to keep him overnight tonight for observations and have him home tomorrow. I anticipate Coach Payton returning to the office sometime Wednesday or Thursday. The recovery period for this type of surgery is three to six months. I would anticipate him being able to put partial weight on it in about eight weeks."
