Locking up Pro Bowl linebacker Jerod Mayo on a long-term basis, the New England Patriots have signed him to a five-year contract extension. A league source confirmed the deal to Scout. No financial terms were disclosed at this time. Mayo is an aggressive, athletic defender with strong leadership qualities.

Mayo was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time last year when he recorded a career-high 175 tackles.

The former NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year has 68 tackles and two interceptions this season even though he was sidelined for two games due to a sprained knee.
