The New Orleans Saints tried out Australian rugby player Hayden Smith, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation.

Smith wasn't immediately signed to a contract, though.

The rugby player also recently tried out for the New York Jets.

After college, Smith played rugby for the Denver Barbos. Last season, he played for the Aviva Premiership Champions Saracens Football Club based in St. Albans, England. He was also named Aviva Community Player of the Year for his work with an inner city rugby coaching program in London.

Smith, a 6-foot-7, 265-pounder originally from Penrith, Australia, is relatively new to the sport of rugby, according to the Saracens website. He attended Metropolitan State College in Denver on a basketball scholarship.
