Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford was named NFL Comeback Player of the Year. Baltimore Ravens Pro Bowl outside linebacker Terrell Suggs is the NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
He recorded 14 sacks and seven forced fumbles, setting a franchise record and leading the NFL in that category. Suggs beat out Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen by seven votes.
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton won NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year as he rushed for 14 touchdowns to set an NFL record for scores by a quarterback in a single season, also becoming the first NFL player to pass for 4,000 yards and rush for 500. He threw 21 touchdowns.
Denver Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller won NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.
Miller had 11 1/2 sacks and beat out 49ers rookie outside linebacker Aldon Smith
Ravens center Matt Birk won the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award for his play on the field and his community involvement.
Birk, 35, who is contemplating retirement, supports youth literacy with a program called "Ready, Set, Read," through his H.I.K.E. Foundation.
He has agreed to donate brain and spinal cord tissue to the Boston University's Center for Traumatic Encephalopathy, which researches the effects of repetitive head trauma.
