The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have released safety Tanard Jackson due to a failed physical, the team announced. The former Syracuse player was selected by the Buccaneers in the fourth round in 2007. Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik said that the release is not related to any issues wth Jackson's previous suspensions for violating the NFL substance-abuse policy.

“What’s important to us as an organization is the growth of our football players and how they handle, on and off the field, becoming the best Buccaneer possible,” Dominik said. “That’s what we’re looking for. To us, ‘growth’ means becoming the best Buccaneer you can possibly be, and we want the growth of this football team to accelerate. That’s what it’s about.” Jackson has played in a total of 56 games with 56 starts and compiled 324 tackles, 10 interceptions, 31 passes defensed and one sack.

Just last fall, the team signed Jackson to a one-year, $3.25 million contract extension that includes a $200,000 roster bonus on the first day of the 2012 league year.. Jackson was due a $2 million base salary this season.

Jackson was reinstated after the fifth game of last season by the NFL following a suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
