Scouting Report: Shawn Johnson

Scouting Report: Shawn Johnson

Name: Shawn Johnson School: Delaware Year: 5Sr
Ht: 6-4.5 Wt: 260 40: 4.9 Pos:DE

Bio: Atlantic Ten Defensive Player of the Year who totaled 74 tackles with 26 tackles for loss, 13.5 sacks and 6 pass defenses in 16 games. Spent his first three seasons playing for Duke and won All-ACC honors in 2002 after leading the conference with 12 sacks and 19.5 tackles for loss, while also collecting 73 tackles. Started five games as a sophomore for the Blue Devils and posted 31/2/5.

Pos: Tough, hard working prospect with good football intelligence. Quick off the snap, rushes the edge with speed and makes a lot of plays in the opponent's backfield. Plays low to the ground with good pad level, rarely off his feet and slips off blocks getting to the action. Fluid changing direction, collapses well laterally and displays an adequate burst to the action. Strong in his upper body, technically sound with his hands and works to defend the run or rush the passer. Plays smart and a patient defender who does not run aimlessly around the field.

Neg: Not explosive for an undersized pass rusher. Easily wired in blocks, lacks the dominant base and is ridden from his angle of attack. Gets stood up on occasion by only ordinary blockers.

Analysis: Transferring from Duke because he wanted to win, Johnson was a main cog in Delaware's run to a national championship last season. Progressed and got better as the season went on and became a force that opponents focused on at the end of the year. While Johnson offers some size potential he may never be an every down lineman, rather a rush specialist best in a system that rotates its lineman. Recommended Stories
