Scouting Report: Fred Russell

Scouting Report: Fred Russell

Name: Fred Russell School Iowa Year 4Jr
Ht: 5-7 Wt: 195 40: 4.55 Pos: RB

Bio: Two year starter named second team All Conference selection last season after carrying the ball 282/1355/7, also adding 6 receptions. Started eleven games as a junior and posted 220/1,264/9 with only a single reception. Saw action in only nine games as a sophomore. Injured his shoulder as a true freshman three games into the season and applied for a medical red-shirt. Could have returned to the Hawkeye's in 2004 but decided to turn pro.

Pos: Tough, explosive ball carrier with outstanding instincts. Runs low to the ground, has darting style and sets up defenders then makes them miss. Elusive, bounces it to the outside avoiding piles and displays the ability to freeze opponents, cut back against the grain and find the open spot in a defense. Outstanding running vision, has a burst through the hole and runs hard on the inside.

Neg: More quick than fast and lacks break away speed. Does not have the power to break tackles on the inside. Marginal blocking and pass receiving skills.

Analysis: In many ways, Russell's running abilities remind us of Amos Zeroed, though his pass catching abilities are not nearly as good as the former West Virginia product. Has a real shot to be a situational/change-of-pace runner at the next level and could be a dangerous offensive threat if he adds the element of return duties to his game and learns how to catch the football. Performance at the combine solidified a first day calling of his name.
