Vinny Back Behind Center; ‘Boys Will Run the ball

Posted Aug 4, 2004

With the sudden and unexpected announcement that the Dallas Cowboys had released starting quarterback Quincy Carter, 40-year old Vinny Testaverde immediately steps in as the club's starting quarterback. In naming Testaverde the starter, head coach Bill Parcells again relies upon a tested veteran to manage the game.

The telling sign with Testaverde is that the Cowboys intend on running the ball as much as possible. No matter how well conditioned they say he is, no one wants to see Testaverde moving around much. In order to keep him on his feet and not on his back, they'll use veteran RB Eddie George and rookie RB Julius Jones as much as possible.

Much like in Parcells days as head coach of the New York Giants back in the late 80's and early 90's, Parcells brought in veteran running back O.J. Anderson to pair up with Joe Morris, all in an attempt to control the clock. Winning with defense was the motto with those Giants teams, expect more of the same with George and Jones.
