Reviewing the draft: Green Bay Packers

Falling from the ranks of the league's competitive franchises, the Packers are a squad with plenty of holes. In the hopes to fill many of them general manager Ted Thompson traded picks and players thorughout the seven rounds of the draft.

Green Bay Packers

The Packers were very active on draft day trading picks and players. Eventually they ended up with twelve selections over the seven rounds. A.J. Hawk was a no brainer fitting both a need at linebacker and bringing a personality the team wants. The team has had a lot of success with linemen such as Daryn Colledge in the past; undersized yet smart and intense. Greg Jennings was good value in round two as were the team's pair of third rounders, Abdul Hodge and Jason Spitz. Both Hodge and Spitz can be used at a variety of slots. While we like Cory Rodgers we feel round four was a bit early for his services. Not so for Will Blackmon, whom the team filled out as a "cornerback" on their selection card. Blackmon will have a chance to get his skills back in order as a defensive back and can help the team as a return specialist. Sixth rounders Johnny Jolly and Tyrone Culver come off poor senior campaigns but can play at the next level if they improve on the playing form they previously showed as juniors.

The pack received a selection in the middle of round three from the Eagles for trading down sixteen slots in round two. They then parlayed disgruntled wide out Javon Walker for the 37th pick of the draft, which they traded for a pair of additional selections. All were solid moves. The team continued to move down and sell off or trade picks. In the end they passed up some talented players such as receiver Jason Avant for projects such as Cory Rodgers, which is questionable.
