Reviewing the draft: New England Patriots

After an early exit from the playoffs, the Patriots found themselves in the odd position of owning a top 25 selection in the draft's first round. Most thought coming into draft weekend the team would concentrate on the defensive secondary. It was an area they did not look at until the final frame.

It was a bit of a surprise when the team selected oft-injured back Laurence Maroney over DeAngelo Williams in round one. While Maroney is a talented ball carrier, the inability to stay healthy and the fact he's never truly carried the load in college is worrisome. We knew the team liked Chad Jackson and they moved up in round two for his services. Considering Jackson's upside, it was a terrific decision. Dave Thomas had been moving up charts and was a good pick in the third frame. Coming out of college, Thomas is a more polished tight end compared to Dan Graham and Ben Watson, both former first round choices by the organization. Garrett Mills was a surprise choice in round four and a reach to our minds. Given the creativity of the Pats coaching staff, they will find ways for Mills to produce. Stephen Gostkowski was a major reach in round four and would have been available much later. Ryan O'Callaghan dropped with medical concerns but was good value in the fifth frame. Ditto for the next four selections, all who have a chance to make the roster in one form or another,

In order to move up sixteen selections in round two the Pats gave away a pick in the middle of the third frame. Though that was a steep price in a deep draft, it was worth it considering the acquisition of Jackson.
