Rutgers Scarlet Knights
On offense, prop 48 player LJ Smith returns for a
fifth season. The athletic, pass catching tight end is more an oversized
receiver than true tight end. He is fluid, displays adequate speed and makes
plays in the defensive backfield. Smith also has nice height and room for growth
but may end up as an H-back at the next level as his blocking skills are
minimal. He’ll need a huge year and good pre-draft workouts to break into the
late frames. Receiver Aaron Martin and a pair of offensive linemen,
tackles Howard Blackwood and Trohn Carswell may get free agent
consideration.
Defensively, Raheem Orr is an explosive but undersized
pass rusher that lines-up in a three point stance but must learn to play a
linebacker position if he’s to succeed at the next level, making plays in
reverse as well as up the field. We were glad to see Tony Berry regain a
year of eligibility and if he returns to the course of play he flashed in 2000,
rather than the very non-descript season he had a year ago, he could fall into
the late rounds.
