Virginia Tech Hokies
On offense many are eager to see the return of Lee Suggs
and how he responds after blowing his knee out last year and missing 99% of the
season. As a junior in ’00 Suggs displayed tremendous
speed/quickness/explosion on the inside with the ability to set up defenders and
make them miss with dazzling footwork. A shifty back, Suggs displays top of the
line run instincts but how he returns from his injury and the results of MRI’s
performed in February on the inured knee will be the determining factor. Anthony
Davis is an athletic left tackle that may be best at guard. Davis plays with
leverage and a strong base, controlling defenders once engaged in a block,
displaying tenacity throughout the action. He is a little short and does not
possess the great footwork, which may precipitate a move inside. Quarterback Grant
Noel has decent size and an adequate arm, but needs a lot of work on his
overall game.
VT loses several quality linebackers and a pair of tackles
but offer multiple terrific underclassmen prospects at defensive end. Junior Nathan
Adibi really stood out to us last year both on film and when we scouted the
Hokies in person. He is an athletic end that plays with speed, leverage and
displays great range, making plays from all directions of the field. A fine
athlete, Adibi needs to add bulk to his frame but has a large degree of upside
potential to his game and could be a force in the draft when he enters. Another
in that vane is a second underclassmen Jim Davis. Not a regular starter
last season, Davis flashed tremendous skills and made a lot of plays up the
field when inserted into the line-up. He has a little more size than Adibi and
like his teammate, a good amount up upside. The final underclassmen would be Cols
Colas, a speedy edge rusher that projects to outside linebacker at the next
level. A duo in the VT secondary will get late round consideration. Willie
Pile is a hard-hitting, run defender at safety, quick to move up the field
and lay it on the line. His pass cover skills are below par, though his
potential on special teams makes him attractive. With a breakout season Ronyell
Whitaker could move up the boards at corner. Whitaker occasionally displays
top cover skills but is shorter than one would like in an every down corner,
which may segment him to a nickel position at the next level.
