BYU Cougars
The offense has a pair of tackles that will get late round
looks. Ben Archibald is a big, strong right side player that blocks with
solid fundamentals and does a nice job in confined quarters. He’s quick with
his hands and blocks with his legs, easily controlling defenders once engaged at
the point of attack. Archibald does not have the height you’d like in a right
tackle but is a possible late round choice at guard. Dustin Rykert
protects the blind side and like Archibald is strong at the pint and best in a
smaller area, which makes a move to the right side very possible. BYU also has a
pair of reliable and active targets in Reno Mahe and Andrew Ord.
Mahe is an elusive receiver, constantly getting open and finding the soft spot
in the defense, displaying solid receiving skills in all aspects of his game.
Ord is similar but a little taller and not as elusive. Neither have the speed to
stretch the defense and as a result will be pushed into the later rounds. Keep
an eye on tight end Spencer Ned; a promising blocker and solid target in
the short field.
Defensively, junior linebacker Paul Walkenhurst is a
hard working run stuffer that can play the middle and possibly the. He displays
a good nose for the ball, always looking to get involved in the action but has
limited speed and quickness. One junior we really like, and a player with a high
upside, is cornerback Jernaro Guilford. A nice sized cover-man, Guilford
is technically sound and effective in either press or zone coverage. He displays
a great break on the pass and closing speed, consistently deflecting away the
ball. What really stands out to us is the field sense and overall ball awareness
Guilford plays with; both are top notch. It is not at all inconceivable that
with a good junior campaign Guilford enters the draft and gets selected during
the first day.
