San Diego State Aztec
Offensively receiver JR Tolver is a nice sized wide out that flashes
the ability to make big receptions down the field and is also equally effective
on the underneath patterns. Tolver is prone to the occasional lapse in
concentration, resulting in more than a fair share of drops, and does not posses
the top end speed to stretch the defense in any usually manner. A big senior
season could push him into the early part of day two; otherwise he’s a free
agent. Center Johnathan Ingram is explosive on the pivot and has slowly
progressed as both a run or pass blocker. He’s a late round pick at best but
does have an outside shot to make it at the next level. Lastly, signal caller Lon
Sheriff is a nice size pocket passer with above average arm strength but his
accuracy and fundamentals are not sound. Sheriff may not even start this season
and will not be drafted, though he should get invited to a camp next summer.
As first reported by the TFY Draft Preview from last January’s
Senior Bowl, defensive lineman Akbar Gbaja-Biamila received a sixth
season of eligibility and looks to set himself up with a big campaign in ’03.
Younger brother to former Aztec Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, Akbar has the size the
Green Bay sack-master does not and is as good an athlete but nowhere near the
quickness or explosion of his big-brother and has yet to prove he is the
football player his brother at this point in their careers. Yet a solid senior
campaign and good pre-draft workouts will push him into the middle frames.
Another Aztec defender that could make a move into the early-or-middle frames is
corner Ricky Sharpe. A nice size cover-man with solid techniques, Sharpe
flourishes backed off the line of scrimmage and easily stays with opposing
receivers around the field. Sharpe has both the physical and mental skills to be
successful at the next level but must really start to put it together, turn up
the intensity and become the force he is capable of or Sharpe will slide down
draft boards.
