NFL Draft '07: Scouting South Florida

Making waves during their initial season in the Big East, South Florida comes off the school's first bowl appearance. The team possesses an outstanding trio of linebackers as well as a top underclassmen receiver.

A former basketball player, Amarri Jackson comes off a solid sophomore campaign and is expected to breakout this year. A tall pass catcher, Jackson effectively uses his frame to shield away opponents and gets vertical to pull the ball from the air. A developing prospect, he offers terrific upside potential. Running back Ricky Ponton moves into the starting lineup with the departure of Andre Hall. Offering better size then his former teammate, Ponton is a terrific inside runner with excellent upside for the next level. Quarterback Pat Julmiste is a big armed athlete who easily drives the football downfield. Yet for all his physical skills Julmiste sprays his throws and has very poor accuracy. He is a developmental prospect and practice squad material. Offensive tackle Thed Watson is an underrated blocker with a good amount of upside ability. Blocking with a wide base, he is a solid position blocker who can also slide his feet off the edge. A junior college transfer, Watson played well in 2005 and a breakout season is expected from him this year.

Defensively Stephen Nicholas is a highly rated senior and an outstanding prospect at weak side linebacker. Getting terrific depth on drops, Nicholas shows speed in every direction. Covering a good amount area on the field he is disciplined with assignments and quick getting to the action. Patrick St. Louis does not rate as highly as his teammate but is another linebacker prospect for the weak side. Flashing on the scene with a burst speed St. Louis scrapes laterally in the box and gets depth on pass drops. Inefficient, he takes incorrect angles to the action and is backup material for the next level. Junior middle linebacker Ben Moffett is a heady ballplayer best up the field. Lacking top sideline-to-sideline range, Moffett offers potential as a backup on the inside or in the middle for a conventional defense.
