Scouting the WAC: Rice
Rice

Posted Aug 5, 2002

Ken Hatfield has been a head coach for a long time, a long time, and has found a comfortable home for himself at Rice. His programs have always been competitive, and the Owls are no different. The problem is a team in the "small" WAC Conference may not get into the post-season or be heard from unless they win the league title. Likewise the offensive style employed at Rice does not lend itself to many pro-prospects while defenders offered by the program are few and far between.

Rice Owls

On offense junior wide out Gavin Booth does the best he can in a triple option and has some skill that may translate to the next level. Fullback Robbie Beck moves into the starting roll and is another junior with some talent for the next level.

Defensively they have a pair of senior linemen to watch. Brandon Green is an athletic yet undersized pass rusher that plays with leverage, speed and chases to get involved in the action. Barely 250-pounds, Green could be destined for outside linebacker and must run well prior to the draft if he’s to slip into the later rounds. BJ Forguson returns after missing most of last season with injury and like Green is explosive, relentless but also a bit shy in the size/strength area and could be a stretch for the late frames. Still; he’d be a perfect as an inexpensive back up for a four-three defense that employs the three technique and should help out on special teams. Junior Patrick Dendy is a solid cover man with nice size, skill and corner techniques.
