Scouting the Big 10: Purdue
Lowe

Posted Aug 18, 2002

Prior to the arrival of Joe Tiller a 6-6 season was considered successful in Lafayette but was looked upon as a bit of a failure after the 2001 season. Tiller's improved the quality of play and players coming from this program. No early round picks next April rather a few steady middle frame choices, though the future does look bright.

Purdue Boilermakers

The top senior prospect would be Motrell Lowe, a quick scat-back with tremendous footwork and elusiveness as well as a terrific pass catcher out of the backfield. Lowe is not big and occasionally runs out of control but should he display the ability to play special teams he’s a definite consideration as a third down back. The next senior behind Lowe though not by much is Gene Mruczkowski, a versatile lineman that can be used at guard or center. Productive from the time he was a freshman, Mruczkowski’s a stout and powerful lineman that easily handles one-on-one blocking assignments, turning opponents off the line of scrimmage and looking to destroy defenders. Not a nifty or nimble blocker, he is restricted to confined quarters and as a result will be given late round consideration. Still, he has a good shot to make it at the next level. Purdue is loaded at receiver and offers prospects that will be sprinkled through the early and middle parts of the next few drafts. Taylor Stubblefield is an explosive sophomore that displays incredible elusiveness, solid speed and good hands. Stubblefield is tall and pencil thin but is a developing talent and potentially and early pick in the future. With much better size, junior John Standeford is best as an intermediate receiver and a prospect that could move up boards in 2004 if he shows any speed. Senior Seth Morales is dependable and will get into a camp next July.

On defense the Boilermakers offer several hard working, solid prospects. Senior linebacker Jason Odom moves to the strong side this season and is a solid, run stuffing defender with a relentless motor. For the most part Odom displays himself to be a two-down defender with minimal pass cover skills and unless that changes on the strong side this year, he’s a free agent selection. A pair of juniors to chart are outside linebacker Niko Koutouvides, an athletic defender with good range and safety Stu Schweigert, a heady defensive back, constantly positioning himself to make a play on the ball but an athlete with limited speed and quickness. Senior Ralph Turner is a king sized safety that needs to get more involved in the action.
