Western Michigan Broncos
Tight end Mo Afariogun has been productive since he was a sophomore
and is an athletic pass catching threat that easily moves about the field and
works to get separation and come free. Afariogun extends his hands and catches
the pass away from his frame, looking the ball into his hands. The problem for
Afariogun is a lack of speed, functional football strength and blocking prowess
as he rarely gets movement from his run blocks. He will need a fast forty time
prior to the draft if he’s to move into the middle frames. Receiver Antonio
Thomas is rarely mentioned but a solid prospect with nice size, hands and
the ability to make the tough catch in traffic. Thomas extends nicely and grabs
the ball out of the air or reaches back for the errant pass. He does a terrific
job using his large frame to keep opponents away and is a definite late round
consideration for 2004, if not earlier. Another junior wide out to keep an eye
in is Kendrick Mosley.
WMU’s top defensive prospect will be sidelined in 2002. Anthony Allsbury
is an undersized yet heady and explosive defensive end that flies around the
football. Quick off the snap, Allsbury pursues the action with speed, catching
the ball carrier from the backside and always looks to get involved in the
action. Considered a possibility at outside linebacker in a three-four scheme,
Allsbury blew his knee out in August and is now out for the season. Line-mate Chris
Browning likewise is an undersized pass rusher that collapses laterally,
making plays up and down the line of scrimmage but lacks the explosion,
quickness and overall playing skills of Allsbury. Finally Jermaine Lewis
is a nice sized athlete that can run and displays strength at the point of
attack. Playing safety last season, Lewis did not show much in the way of
instinct or wherewithal taking the wrong angles to the action and gathering into
his tackles. Lewis moves to the other side of the ball this season and will be
used at receiver.
