Toledo Rockets
On offense they have a pair of solid third-year-sophomores at tight end in Andrew
Clarke and Chris Holmes, both of whom are productive both blocking or
catching the ball and should definitely be charted for the future. After that
you are looking at three receivers of free agent variety. Carl
Ford is a tall angular wide out with soft hands and a reliable pass catcher
effective after the throw. Manny Johnson is an explosive receiver with
tremendous speed but a marginal football player while Donta’ Green is a
productive receiver with a short, compact build which may make it difficult for
him at the next level. His abilities as a return specialist give him an outside
shot.
On defense linebacker Tom Ward is a relentless player, quick to read/react to the action or pick up his assignments and the first to throw his
body around the field in order to make the stop. On face value he has lousy
size/speed numbers and won’t be drafted but is definitely the type of prospect
that could impress a coach with his relentless style of play, which should spill
over to special teams and possibly secure his spot on a final roster. They
have a pair of corners to watch. Brandon Hefflin is a solid cover corner
and the junior has had opposing signal callers looking away from him the past
two seasons. Though we did not feel Hefflin showed a lot of progress in ’01 as
a sophomore he still has a good deal of upside potential to his game. Senior Jehu
Anderson is a nice sized corner that works well with the safety but does not
display great speed or body positioning in man-coverage.
