2008 NFL Free Agents-Quarterbacks

QB Derek Anderson

Scout.com's Adam Caplan will take a look at the free agent class of 2008 with an inside look at each position. We get started in this week's version with quarterbacks.

Derek Anderson/Cleveland Browns (RFA) - The big issue here is, what will the team do with him? They most certainly will at least use the high tender on him (first and third round) based on his play and based on Scout.com's survey of how many teams will need a starting quarterback for next season and beyond. But they could choose to place the rarely used franchise tag the restricted free agent. Of course that would keep Anderson for one more year at the average salary of the top five quarterbacks. The Browns say it's a good problem to have but keep in mind they traded their first-round selection for 2008 in order to select QB Brady Quinn.

Scheme Fit
: Vertical Stretch

Daunte Culpepper/Oakland (UFA) - He purposely signed a one-year deal because he wanted a chance to start again. Culpepper didn't show anyone this season what they didn't already know. He's not the same player he was before he suffered a serious knee injury. Culpepper, according to league insiders, has become more of a street ball quarterback meaning a lot of what he does is improvisational.

Scheme Fit: Vertical Stretch

Rex Grossman/Chicago Bears (UFA) - He has flashed talent from time to time in his 28 starts over five years of play. But Grossman has been a mistake prone signal caller and hasn't been accurate enough for long stretches of time. His mechanics have also come in question. But of late, he has started to regain confidence and has cut down on his mistakes. He does have an above average arm but is short and some times has problems seeing over linemen.

Others That Might Receive Some Interest
Josh McCown/Oakland Raiders (UFA) - He's a journeyman who has good athletic ability but isn't very accurate. He has started 27 games in six seasons.

Quinn Gray/Jacksonville Jaguars (UFA) - He did a decent job filling in for starting QB David Garrard this season. He has good size and above average arm and could fill a No. 2 role for a team.

Cleo Lemon/Miami Dolphins (UFA) - He has been in the league a while but only has five starts. Lemon has a decent arm and should be a No.2 quarterback for a team.

Tim Rattay/Arizona Cardinals (UFA) - Journeyman type of signal caller that could fill a No. 2 role.

Ryan Fitzpatrick/St. Louis Rams (RFA) - Showed some upside for one game replacing injured QB Marc Bulger but he didn't look good after that. He does decent size.
