Players Added
Josh McCown/QB - He'll be given a chance to compete for the starting job
against John Beck.
Ernest Wilford/WR - Wilford will give the passing game some badly needed
size--especially in the red zone area.
David Kircus/WR - He has decent size and speed and will provide some depth to
the position.
Sean Ryan/TE - He's a decent blocker and another player who is familiar with
what the new regime is looking for at tight end.
Tab Perry/WR - The former Cincinnati Bengal offers good size and ability but needs to stay healthy for a change if he's to help his new team.
Justin Smiley/G - He'll take over at right guard for the foreseeable future.
Jason Ferguson/DT - If healthy, Ferguson could be a big boost to their run
defense.
Randy Starks/DT - The plan is for him to play end in their 3-4 defense.
Reggie Torbor/LB - He's slated to start on the strong-side.
Charlie Anderson/LB - He'll play on special teams and probably back up on the
strong-side.
Keith Davis/S - He'll instantly upgrade their special teams coverage.
Chris Crocker/S - He'll compete for playing time against Jason Allen.
Nathan Jones/CB - The special teams player will vie for a role in their dime
defense.
Players Lost
Trent Green/QB - McCown will replace him.
Cleo Lemon/QB - He'll take over the No. 2 job with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Jesse Chatman/RB - He'll compete for playing time with the New York Jets.
Marty Booker/WR - He's back where he started his career with the Chicago Bears.
L.J. Shelton/OL - He's unsigned but should be able to find backup work after the
draft.
Rex Hadnot/OL - He's slated to serve as a backup currently with the Cleveland
Browns.
Mike Rosenthal/OL - He missed all of last season due to injury.
Chris Liwienski/OL - He could find work in August.
Keith Traylor/DT - The veteran interior lineman may retire.
Donnie Spragan/LB - He remains unsigned.
Derrick Pope/LB - The versatile linebacker will back up a few spots with the
Minnesota Vikings.
Zach Thomas/LB - The team decided to part ways with him but Thomas found a home
with the Dallas Cowboys, likely as a backup though.
Travares Tillman/S - He remains unsigned.
Lance Schulters/S - The journeyman safety might be able to find work by the
start of training camps.
Pre-Draft Team Needs
Right Tackle - With Vernon Carey set to stay at left tackle, the
right tackle position remains open. The hope is that head coach Tony Sparano and
offensive line coach Mike Maser can finally get this underachieving line to play
up to solid standards.
Left Guard
- With Hadnot signing elsewhere, there's an opening for a starting spot at
this position. They also could use a solid backup as well.
Cornerback - The team has depth at the position but they don't have a
quality starter at either spot.
Wide Receiver - The additions of Wilford and Kircus aren't seen as
significant and the team remains without two viable solid starters. Some would
argue that Ted Ginn and Derek Hagan are still in the developmental stage.
Tight End - Veteran David Martin is coming off his best season as
a professional with 34 catches yet he lacks the kind of consistency that the
team needs from the position.
