Analysis
The 49ers were pleasantly surprised to see several top defensive prospects whom they had targeted still available when it came to their No. 29 selection, and they quickly swooped in to take the North Carolina product, whom they thought would have been off the board by the time San Francisco went on the clock. Balmer immediately upgrades what has been one of the team's weakest areas for several years, and he will step into a defensive line rotation in the team's 3-4 scheme that includes expensive free-agent newcomer Justin Smith and Isaac Sopoaga, whom San Francisco retained with a $20 million deal in March. Balmer will immediately push holdover Aubrayo Franklin for the starting position at nose tackle, and the team also believes he has the athleticism to slide over to end in the 3-4 if needed. Balmer has yet to reach his potential, and vociferous 49ers defensive line coach Jim Tomsula is just the kind of guy that can get it out of him. - Craig Massei, SFIllustrated.com

Take
Balmer is a decent value here and he'll likely line up at end in their 3-4 defensive scheme. He may be a little too small to play NT. He'll also give them some pass rushing help from their front three.
