Analysis
There was some thought the Dolphins wouldn't be able to pass up quarterback Chad Henne if he was available at No. 32, but the Dolphins also badly needed some defensive linemen for their 3-4. In particular, the Dolphins badly needed a defensive end to line up opposite Vonnie Holliday. The starting defensive ends last year were Matt Roth and Jason Taylor, both of whom are undersized for a 3-4 defense. So this pick fills a major need, and as a bonus the Dolphins got a guy many had projected to go in the first round. - Alain Poupart, Dolphins Digest

Caplan's
Take
Merling slipped down draft boards much farther than anticipated. He has a variety of pass rush moves and he'll play end in their anticipated 3-4 scheme.
