Comments: I truly don’t believe the Jets front office personnel have the football expertise to ultimately lead this football team to where they need to be. Over the last half decade, they have made far too many player personnel mistakes and although the club has played well in recent weeks, beating the Chiefs, Bengals, Rams and slumping Bills doesn’t represent quality victories. Since taking over two seasons ago, I haven’t been over-whelmed with the work of their coaching staff in terms of creativity, execution and ability to win critical games. That being said, I really believe Mike Devlin, Bob Sutton and Jimmy Raye are all excellent teachers who lend stability to the coaching staff.
The acquisition of Brett Favre has given the offensive a proven entity with experience and leadership, but who in the front office believed that the Jets were just one player (a quarterback) away from capturing an AFC East division title and at 38 years of age, is he legitimately part of the club’s long range future?
Joey Clinkscales, Jim Cochran, and Mike Davis are very experienced and excellent personnel scouts, but the clubs choice of the underachieving Vernon Gholston with the sixth pick in the 2008 player draft was to say the least a selection based strictly on his numbers and were not based on his play, effort and position skills on the field. I received some criticism on some team message boards for ranking him a mid to late first round selection and although I am not looking for an apology, based on his play (or lack of it), but after viewing him in extensive action, I feel totally vindicated.
Word on the street has it that both Brett and Dianna Favre have really been hurt by the negative press coverage and personal attacks and will likely not return for the 2009 season.
Given the state of the AFC East division and the league as a whole, if the Jets were to defeat just the mid to lower level clubs within the league, they would have a very real chance of making it to the NFL second season.
