Comments: The Chiefs problems, in my opinion, began long before the start of the 2008 season and are directly related to managements’ inability to recognize that the team had a major void at the quarterback position. What seasoned, savvy football person could possibly have thought that a Croyle, Huard and Thigpen had the skill sets to win football games at the professional level. I would have handled the Larry Johnson situation much distinctly different. The moment he (Johnson) refused to come out of the game and was hell bent on embarrassing would have been his last game as a Chief if I were in charge. I also believe his insubordination gave the Chiefs solid grounds for a breach of contract case with the players association. If one is bound to lose, you do it with the right kind of people.
The Chiefs scouting staff is among the best in professional football. I actually worked with three of their personnel scouts and feel all have excellent instincts, are experienced and have shown good judgment.
I’m certainly not close to the situation, but I have to wonder if there is a disconnect between long time GM Carl Peterson and head coach Herman Edwards. The two go back over thirty years, but I suspect the two ego driven individuals are heading in totally different directions.
Unlike a basketball or hockey squad, putting together a football clubs requires time and patience. The Chiefs will in time turn this thing around. It won’t happen overnight, but the task will be further complicated if the club doesn’t do something radical about the troubling quarterback position.
