Robert Mathis
Robert Mathis

Posted Dec 16, 2002

If you're looking for a "sleeper" at linebacker, or a small school diamond in the rough, Robert Mathis is one to keep an eye on. The SWAC defender makes a lot of tackles up the field and must now learn a new position.

Full Name: Robert Mathis    School: Alabama A&M

Ht:6-0     Wt: 225     40: 4.72

Year: 4Sr    Number: 55

Stats/ Bio

2001: Second team SWAC performer totaling 37/15/9, struggling with injuries at seasons end.

2000: All Conference pick after 67/32/13.

1999: 59/16/9 his first season.

Scouting Report

The Good:  College defensive end that has potential at outside linebacker in the NFL.  Quick off the snap out of a three point stance, rushes the edge with speed and plays low to the ground with leverage.  Strong at the point of attack, holds his ground against blocks and rarely off his feet.  Redirects to the action well, fluid changing direction and fast to the flanks.  Works hard, pursues to get involved in the action and attacks the ball carrier.

The Bad:  Takes off up the field, over-pursues the action and lacks a sustained burst of speed.

The Skinny:  A little to small for consideration as a pass rush specialist so must learn an entirely new position but has the athletic numbers, intelligence and tenacity to succeed.
