Scouting the Mobile Bowl
GMAC Bowl

Posted Dec 18, 2002

One of the better bowl match-ups of the post season comes at the beginning of the festivities and it features a pair of programs with a bunch of first day picks filling the rosters. Potentially two of the initial three signal callers to be selected will be tossing footballs around all night in a game offering a bunch of top pro-prospects.

GMAC Bowl

Marshall  VS  Louisville

Marshall

Like the sun rising in the east, the Thundering Herd constantly win the MAC championship with as much regularity.  And as is the case every year their best NFL prospects reside on the offensive side of the ball.  Quarterback Byron Leftwich will be one of the initial five selections of next April's draft, possibly making a move to the top of the heap should he perform well at the Senior Bowl.  The amount of receiving talent the big pocket passer can throw to is enormous; Darrius Watts rebounded nicely from a shoulder injury early in the year to have a big season, Denero Marriot is the team's most reliable target while Josh Davis took his game to the next level.  All are except Marriott are underclassmen, all are terrific pro-prospects and each could be selected anywhere from the early first round to the early first day when they eventually enter the draft.  Offensive tackle Steve Sciullo blocks upfront and while there is a wide range of views on his potential for the next level, we feel he is a mid-round choice best blocking on the right side.  Line-mate Steve Perretta is a solid run blocker best in confined quarters at guard.  Corners Yancey Satterwhite and Terence Tarpley, along with safety Chris Crocker are free agent prospects.

Louisville

Its' been a tough year for Dave Ragone and the Cardinals, though don't blame the  Louisville passer.  As we witnessed firsthand, Ragone has minimal talent around him yet plays a relentless style of football.  He must get some momentum going into the pre-draft process and Marshall's soft defense could be what the doctor ordered.  The fact Ragone is singularly the only Cardinal offensive prospect speaks volumes.  The defense is another story; Dewayne White is seriously considering leaving early for the draft even though he's having an off season yet the defensive end  will still be a top 60 selection.  Anthony Floyd could be drafted shortly after White if he shows man-to-man cover skills during pre-draft workouts and gives scouts the idea he can play corner as well as safety.Curry Burns will get late round looks at strong safety and should outside linebacker Chad Lee run well for the stopwatch prior to the draft he will also slide into the late rounds.  Underclassmen cornerback Ronnie Gallishaw, a talented cover man and solid prospect for the future, will be tested all night and should be one to watch.
