Scouting the Tangerine Bowl
Tangerine Bowl

Posted Dec 22, 2002

The team that occasionally runs the option on offense against a program that puts the ball in the air more than 50% of the time. Should be a fun game to watch with a lot of points. It is also an important contest for Kliff Kingsbury, a quarterback that always brings about big debate when talking of his pro-potential at the next level. Clemson comes off a very disappointing campaign and offers a few solid prospects.

Red Raiders  Clemson

Texas Tech

Quarterback Kliff Kingsbury puts up tremendous numbers in the Texas Tech offense, a system oriented towards the pass, as he's an intelligent passer with a good feel for the position.  Heavily questioned though are his physical skills, his arm strength namely.  If he proves any pass velocity in the post season or the ability to drive the deep ball, Kingsbury stands to be a top 75 choice; otherwise the middle of the second day is where Kingsbury will hear his name called. Another Red Raider with a lot on the line is defensive end  Aaron Hunt, a relentless pass rusher that makes an inordinate amount of tackles behind the line of scrimmage.  Should Hunt show any ability to stop the run against good competition he'll be off the board before the second round is over.  The rest of the Texas Tech players are late round/free agent prospects; Anton Paige has adequate size/speed numbers but is still developing as a wide out, Rex Richards works hard on the offensive line but is a limited athlete with minimal upside potential while Lawrence Flugence is a solid run stuffer at inside linebacker but must pick up his pass cover skills.  Like his teammates pre-draft workouts are critical for Flugence.

Clemson

The Tigers top prospect, tackle Derrick Brantley, went down early in the season with a major knee injury and the potential to be a first day selection was dashed.  Teams will love his athleticism but the injury will throw up a lot of red flags. Clemson's other tackle, Gary Bryd, had a solid season and is now getting middle round consideration.   Wide receiver JJ McKelvey has solid wide out size and surprisingly makes a lot of plays down the field but lacks the consistency and concentration needed to be considered prior to the fifth round. Defensive tackle Nick Eason looks like a world beater on one play then an egg beater the next snap.  He has been bitten by the injury bug which has severely slowed his development.  A trio of "sleepers" to watch on defense; Bryant McNeal, an undersized but explosive pass rusher with the athletic skills to be dropped off the ball and moved to outside linebacker, Rodney Thomas, another undersized and explosive defender at outside linebacker with terrific range and Eric Meekins, a big, imposing safety that plays with a good degree of intelligence.
