VS
New Mexico
The Lobos had a terrific campaign
and should be applauded for their return to the post season but not many
players on their roster will be playing on Sunday's next year. Junior Jason Lenzmeier
is a big, solid run blocking tackle with a decent amount of upside potential
while Dwight Counter offers a reliable set of hands at wide
receiver.
UCLA
As was the case under much of Toledo's
tenure with the Bruins, UCLA had an up and down season and failed to meet
expectations, though injuries dealt them a bad hand. They have a pair of
offensive tackles
that are free agent prospects; Bryce Bohlander, a big,
strong thug best in very confined quarters and Mike Saffer who is very similar. Saffer is a little better in space, which may push him
into the middle rounds. Tight
end Mike Seidman had a fine campaign and is
a thinking man's pass catcher at the position. Unfortunately he's slow and
adequate at best as a blocker. He seems to be a poor man's Jay Reimersma
and could find a niche at the next level. Junior receiver Tab Perry had a
very inconsistent season and gave way to another underclassmen wide
out,
Craig Bragg, who looks like a future star. Outside
linebacker
Marcus Reese
is a solid athlete that offers special teams help, though he's had problems with
concussions in the past. Cornerback Ricky Manning Jr could be a
middle round gem; a
tad undersized, teams obviously did not challenge him in 2002 and threw the
other way. He may never be a starter at the next level but could fit in as
a solid nickel back.
