Scouting the Hawaii Bowl
Hawaii Bowl

Posted Dec 24, 2002

This is a contest which features a lot of "returns"; the return of Tulane to the bowl scene for the first time since the days of Shaun King, the return of Hawaii to the post season after getting snubbed last year and best of all for college football purists, the return of a Christmas Day Bowl game to the Islands.

Hawaii Bowl

Tulane  VS  Hawaii

Tulane

We scouted the Green Wave personally this year and were less than impressed.  Junior quarterback JP Losman has a big arm but not a good feel for the position, running back Mewelde Moore looks to be a fraction of what he was in 2001 and is almost an afterthought in the offense but to his credit looks like a terrific receiver out of the backfield.  Wide out Roydell Williams was lost to an early season injury but in the end could be Tulane's most productive NFL player.  They have a trio of talented defensive backs; Lynaris Elpheage flashes cover skills on occasion and could be a decent dime back at the next level.  The same can be said for Jeff Sanchez, who is also a good special teams player.  Adrian Mitchell is a solid sized free safety that likes to mix it up and can also cover in deep center field.  Punter/place kicker Seth Marler has got a big leg but must improve his accuracy and directional kick ability.

Hawaii

It was a terrific campaign for the Warriors, though they will always be the Rainbow Warriors to us.  They offer several solid first day, middle round and late frame picks.  Offensively the headliner is Vince Manuwai, a smart and athletic guard that can be used in several different blocking schemes.  Though he lacks the top size as of now, his versatility will be in high demand next April.  Overlooked by many scouts is tackle Lui Fuata, a prospect we feel has nice potential at the next level inside as both a pass protector and run blocker.  Defensively outside linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa has already made it known he will not return to Hawaii for a fourth season on the football field, even though it looks as though he'll meet academic requirements and will be eligible. Tinoisamoa is undersize but explosive, quick and looks like he has potential on the weak side.  Chris Brown is a tough, run-stuffing middle linebacker that has difficulty playing in space.  Another underrated Hawaii senior would be Laanui Correa, a deceptively strong defensive end that rushes the passer yet also stuffs the run effectively.
