Scouting the Insight.com Bowl
Insight.com Bowl

A real good match-up and one of the more underrated games of the entire bowl season. Pittsburgh played well all year and were it not for a late season slip-up against arch-rival West Virginia, would be playing on New Year's Day. Oregon State was up and down during the campaign but offers a lot of talent on its' roster.

Oregon St  VS  Pitt

Oregon St

Offensively their best prospects lay in the ranks of the underclassmen.  Guard Mike Kuykendall is the only senior that may get draft consideration though he is very likely a free agent.  Kuykendall plays left tackle but really struggles in space and is not dominant enough as a run blocker for late round consideration.  Lee Davis, once thought of as a prospect, was second on the depth chart for most of the season.  James Newsom is a big play, consistent wide out that has a nose for the end zone.  He made noise about possibly entering the draft and if he follows through, fits into the late first day with good pre-draft workouts.  Tim Euhus is a complete tight end that looks to be a solid prospect as he develops.  The Beavs offer a lot of talent throughout the defense.  Dennis Weathersby is the first name on everyone's lips as the big, strong press corner has been productive since he was a freshman.  Weathersby has solid cover skills but some limitations; he has difficulty with quick, explosive receivers, lacks the deep speed and falls asleep on occasion.  Good pre-draft workouts as well as a solid showing in the Senior Bowl are of utmost importance as is the versatility of showing he can play safety.  Outside linebacker Nick Barnett is an explosive sideline-to-sideline defender and complete player that will make some team happy in the middle rounds while middle linebacker Richard Seigler also plays with great suddenness and a prospect for the future that could end up in the first round.  Defensive tackle Eric Manning could slide into the late part of the first day; a quick and relentless front line player, Manning would be perfect for the three-technique or if placed next to a wide body.  Terrell Roberts may project as a dime back and looks like a free agent while safety Calvin Carlyle is a terrific centerfielder with solid cover skills but a history of injuries, shoulder concerns most specifically, will throw up a lot of red flags next April.

Pittsburgh

The Panthers are well coached and get the most from its' talent.  On defense linebacker Gerald Hayes is having a great senior campaign and as a result soaring up draft boards, moving into the initial two frames.  Cornerback Torrie Cox combines solid cover skills with a tenacious attitude.  He is the type of prospect that slips through the cracks into the middle frames and becomes a bargain in the draft.  On offense the Panthers best prospects are underclassmen starting with tackle Rob Petitti, a good looking lineman effective blocking for both the run or pass.  Guard Bryan Anderson offers a tough and hard working run blocker that has difficulty in space while Lamar Slade has an outside shot as a teams fifth receiver at the next level.
