Scouting the Holiday Bowl
Holiday

If you love college football, if you love sitting in front of your television the last week every year and watching wall to wall bowl games, if you love heart wrenching finishes, then you love the Holiday Bowl, a contest ripe with fantastic finishes, wild games and high scoring events. Most of that should be true tonight as this game also offers the first cornerback to be selected in next April's draft and possibly the first defensive end to come off the board as well.

 ASU     VS     K-St

Arizona State

The Sun Devils had a terrific campaign contending for the Pac Ten title till the last month of the season.  It is easy to see why as this is a roster loaded with pro-prospects.  First and foremost would be defensive end Terrell Suggs, who's probably playing his last college game and will go on to be a top ten selection next April.  Suggs is a monster pass rusher that consistently blows up the opponents plays yet also displays the versatility to successfully drop into pass coverage and effectively play in space 10-15 yards off the line of scrimmage.  Suggs has the makings of a special player.  Another underclassman that could leave the desert after tonight's game is receiver Shaun McDonald, a quick, explosive wide out and though a little "undersized" the go-to guy that cannot be stopped by opponents.  Tight end Mike Pinkard has been talked up a lot lately as he's athletic and at the top of his game, a complete player.  Pinkard really does not excite us as we were expecting more from him this year; he flashes skills but is not a consistent target in the offense nor always dominant at the point of attack in his blocking capacity.  We feel junior Regis Crawford will be the next top flight lineman to come from the ASU program and though he presently mans the left tackle position could be a better fit at guardMiddle linebacker Solomon Bates, outside linebacker Mason Unck and safety Alfred Williams will all be given free agent consideration.

Kansas St

Kansas State always seems to get to the hump but not over it.  They also usually have a slew of defensive backs to offer on draft day and now offer the nation's best cornerback prospect in Terrance Newman, a true shutdown corner best backed off the line of scrimmage in "man off" coverage.  Newman runs like the wind and displays great ball skills.  He will not be effective if used in press coverage and could turn the intensity up supporting the run.  Though he's a bit over-aged Newman will still be an early pick in five months.  The match-up against Shaun McDonald tonight will be a good one.  K-State has a terrific pair of underclassmen linebackers.  Terry Pierce mans the middle, though we feel he can be moved to the outside, offering an athletic force that seeks out ball handlers and destroys plays.  Likewise teammate Josh Buhl is also outstanding in pursuit from his outside linebacker spot, making a lot of plays all over the field against both the run or pass.  Both Pierce and Buhl will be very high choices when they eventually enter the draft.
