Scouting the Alamo Bowl
Alamo

Posted Dec 27, 2002

A game that's offered a few close contests between the Big 12 and Big Ten may be hard pressed to keep a close score as Colorado, conference runners-up to the Sooners, seemingly outman the Badgers who had an up and down season. Big draft news from both schools, though it was not of the variety NFL fans were hoping for.

Colorado

The Buffs were competitive most of the year but a late season injury to feature runner Chris Brown hurt more than just the running back.  Brown will be back for this game and reportedly back in Boulder next year as he's publicly stated he will bypass the NFL Draft for a final year of college eligibility.  A big, powerful inside runner, Brown will be highly ranked with a big season in 2003.  Junior Derek McCoy is a big play receiver coming off a so-so season but a solid prospect for the future while two senior blockers, center Wayne Lucier and tackle Justin Bates figure in the late rounds.  On defense CU has two prospects that could make a move up draft boards with solid post-season performances.  Tyler Brayton is an explosive lineman who plays with a relentless motor but lacks the speed for end and size for tackle.  A fast forty or good lifting workout in February will help his cause.  Cornerback Donald Strickland has decent size and an aggressive style of play.  He may be a little small for press coverage and needs to run well for the clock if a team's going to take a shot on him late in the first day as a man-off corner.

Wisconsin

Possibly the best news coming out of Madison is receiver Lee Evans will return next year and skip the draft.  Without Evans the Badgers have but a single first day choice, center Al Johnson.  A powerful pivot man that gets a lot of movement from his run blocks, Johnson's improved in pass protection and becoming a total lineman.  Cousin Ben Johnson struggled this season at left tackle and as we predicted all along, looks as though he'll be unable to handle the duties of protecting the blind side in the NFL.  Line-mate Jason Jowers looks like a solid free agent prospect at either guard or tackle while defensive end Jake Sprague and cornerbacks BJ Tucker may garner late round consideration.  When looking at the Badgers from a scouting point of view the interesting story is Brooks Bolinger, recently invited to the combine.  A solid athlete, Bolinger is not a good quarterback and a project at another position such as safety.
