Scouting the Seattle Bowl
Seattle Bowl

Posted Dec 30, 2002

Good match-up between a program that backed into the post season and another who had to scratch and claw their way into a bowl game. Except for one defensive lineman and possibly a junior running back, this games offers a good amount of middle round picks that could find their way onto rosters next September.

Seattle Bowl

Oregon  VS Wake

Oregon

The Ducks made noise in the Pac Ten during the season's first two months before hitting the skids in November, just about the same time their top pro-prospect, Onterio Smith, went down with injury.  Smith is a complete running back that catches the ball well and impacts the game as a return specialist.  He has a lot of Marshall Faulk in him and like Faulk, is a bit undersized and may struggle with injuries early into his pro-career until he physically matures.  George Wrighster, another junior, may take advantage of a poor crop tight ends and throw his hat into the mix, which would not be a good choice.  An undersized pass catcher that has spent time at full back, Wrighster's a fine athlete but needs to physically develop and improve his blocking. Yet another junior, this time receiver Sammie Parker, offers game breaking skills but like his teammates, is better served staying in college another year. Fellow wide out Keenan Howry gets an "A" for effort and intelligence but size concerns will push him deep into the draft while Jason Willis has the size for receiver and good hands but minimal speed. Seth McEwen is a tough and hard working defensive end with growth potential and a good bet in the late rounds while pass rusher Darrell Wright plays faster than his forty time and could project outside in a three-four alignment.

Wake Forest

The Deamon Deacs have a hard working team and are enjoyable to watch, as we saw first hand during the first weekend in NovemberDefensive end   Calvin Pace is one of their better pro-prospects the school's offered in a while and we expect him to torment the Oregon quarterback all day.  Roderick Stephen, himself a solid prospect, offers a nice bookend to Pace and will garner late round consideration.  Fullback Ovie Mughelli is an impressive looking specimen in either pads on ordinary clothes and a class guy. He's a little to stiff but a fine athlete with terrific power, punch and explosion, which will help him vie for the number one slot at his position.
