Scouting the Humanitarian Bowl
Humanitarian Bowl

Posted Dec 30, 2002

A game with teams in contrast; the Boise State Broncos who sizzled all season long and had the opportunity to play in a much bigger bowl game against the Iowa State Cyclones, a squad that badly fizzled at the end of 2002 and finished the campaign losing to the Connecticut Huskies, a basketball school. Several solid middle-to-late round draft picks on both rosters.

Boise State

Running back Brock Forsey is one of the nation's most enjoyable players to watch; a versatile skill player he piles up the yardage on offense the way snow piles up in Boise.  Forsey does not have great size/speed numbers for the next level but does possess the heart, intensity and desire that will have some coach falling in love with him and help Forsey find a spot on a roster as a third down back and special teams player.   Jay Swillie has the size/speed numbers team covet in a big receiver while also flashing big play ability on occasion but his overall game lacks consistency.  Bottom line for Swillie; first day physical skills but late round production. Lou Fanucchi offers reliability at receiver and an intelligent pass catcher that occasionally sneaks it down field on occasion but a lack of speed makes him a free agent at best.  Ryan Dinwiddie is a solid signal caller that makes good decisions from the pocket and will be highly ranked going into the 2003 season. Safety Quinton Mikell is a hard hitting run defender in centerfield but displays deficiencies in pass coverage and lacks the size one want is a true strong safety.

Iowa State

ISU looked good early in the year as quarterback Seneca Wallace had a Heisman-type campaign going before it all unraveled when they handily lost to the Sooners.  Now the question remains for Wallace; what is his best position at the next level?  We do not feel it will be at quarterback and think in no way is he this year's version of Antwaan Randle-El (Randle-El was much more electrifying and explosive).   He could be used as a third down back or maybe a defensive back; whatever it is Wallace has his work cut out for him.  Matt Word makes plays sideline-to-sideline and goes hard for sixty minutes but size concerns will push him late into the draft.  He looks perfect on the inside in a three-four alignment or a back-up on the outside who has a real chance of becoming a special teams demon.  Jeremy Loyd is also a little shy in the size department but plays a tough brand of football which may help him stick at the next level.
