Scouting the Cotton Bowl
Cotton

Posted Dec 31, 2002

A good contest between two programs which expected more during the 2002 campaign but fell short of expectations. Both squads are loaded with players that will be drafted throughout all seven rounds of the next three drafts and will be playing in the NFL for a long time.

LSU  VS  Texas

LSU

The Tigers are a team we felt underachieved last season but the quarterback position was very unsettled after an injury to Matt Mauck.  Running back Dominic Davis is a player we were always high on and really improved his draft stock with a solid campaign.  He is the consummate third down back that impacts the game as a return specialist.  To our minds he's a better version of former Tiger Kevin Faulk.  We've reported for almost two months LaBrandon Toefield is considering going pro regardless of his constant injuries that spelled him and for all the big time talent he possesses an inability to stay healthy would push him out of the first day.  Linebacker Bradie James is a favorite name amongst many but to our minds lacks the speed to play either outside positions and just does not excite us on the inside.

Texas

Once again the OU Sooners spelled doom for UT, ruining any chance for a run at the national title.  Where will Chris Simms get drafted?  To our minds not in the top 45 unless he really builds on the momentum he started at the end of the season.  A good showing against Nick Saban's defensive schemes would help but a terrific week of Senior Bowl practices is more important.  Receiver Roy Williams has twice stated he is returning to Austin for his senior campaign, which is the right choice and hopefully BJ Johnson follows that same route.  Rush end Cory Redding is a tough defender that should break into the top sixty selections.  Derrick Dockery will be a top 75 choice and many are considering the run blocking guard for right tackle at the next level.  Defensive tackle Marcus Tubbs could make the jump as he is a run stuffing force in the middle that commands double teams and would be a hot commodity on draft day.  Cornerback Rod Babers had a very solid campaign and if he continues to show well in the post season could move into the top 60 choices while several we spoke with are also high on junior Nathan Vahser.
