The Saints had just four selections in this year's draft and nearly two weeks after the event, I'm still wondering what possibly could they be thinking? I liked Malcolm Jenkins, the clubs first selection, but I wonder if he has the speed to play out on an island at the professional level. Chip Vaughn has nice numbers, but is very much a down in the box first down safety. I thought he sorted things out quickly and comes downhill quickly. He hustles in pursuit and will try and deliver the knockout punch whenever possible. In coverage, I thought he looked extremely awkward. Is acutely pigeon toed and was more than a little tight in his hips. He's better in zone and if he can get there he's going to drop the hammer on you, but the more I watched him, the more I recognized his limitations. I thought Vaughn' teammate at Wake Forest Stanley Arnoux had problems meeting and defeating blocks. I didn't think he used his hands especially well and did not play effectively in traffic. I also believed he was no better than an average tackler (doesn't attack). I also though he struggled to make plays outside the tackle box. He runs well enough, but he just didn't to have much feel for it. In coverage, he appeared to sort things out well enough, but depth and movement away from the football was just adequate. The Saints surprisingly traded up to select SMU punter Thomas Morestead. Now don't get me wrong, I really liked mechanics, operation consistency and leg strength. He is an experienced hand, but after watching him perform at the senior bowl and at the combine, I wonder if anyone aside from myself, questioned his ability to catch the football? The Saints have a very inexperienced scouting staff and will have to do better than this if they ever hope to make it to the big dance.
