Divisional Round Team Rankings

Mark Sanchez (AP)

We're taking an inside look at all 32 teams and how they stack up against each other for the coming weeks and months based on personnel and needs.

1) Indianapolis Colts: Not much to complain about with this team. Depth at linebacker is a little shaky. The secondary depth isn't bad despite losing a few key players back there.

Record: 14-2

Last Ranking: 1

Needs Still to be Filled: QB (veteran depth), RT (veteran depth), SLB (veteran depth), MLB (veteran depth)

2) New Orleans Saints: The pass rush must really show up this week against the high-powered Cardinal passing game. They really need to add a pass rusher or two next season.

Record: 13-3

Last Ranking: 2

Needs Still to be Filled: LT (veteran depth), RT (veteran depth), DE (veteran depth), SLB (veteran depth)

3) San Diego Chargers: Their coaching staff did a great job of not panicking after a very slow start. The weaknesses of this team are still in the secondary, but they have to find a better running game for next season.

Record: 13-3

Last Ranking: 3

Needs Still to be Filled: LT (veteran depth), G (veteran depth), CB (veteran depth), S (veteran depth)

4) Dallas Cowboys: Finally, this team is starting to realize its potential on both sides of the ball. The coaching staff has done a very nice job of keeping things together this season despite some issues with personnel early on.

Record: 12-5

Last Ranking: 5

Needs Still to be Filled: LT (veteran depth), OLB (pass rushing depth), CB (veteran depth), S (veteran depth)

5) Minnesota Vikings: Who will be the quarterback of the future? This is yet another team that has to solve that particular dilemma. The offensive line needs upgrading.

Record: 12-4

Last Ranking: 6

Needs Still to be Filled: C (veteran depth), G (veteran depth), MLB (veteran depth), WLB (veteran depth), SLB (veteran depth), SS (veteran depth), FS (veteran depth)

6) Arizona Cardinals: The Cardinals have to figure out who their quarterback of the future is and probably as soon as possible. The secondary has issues at cornerback which have to be resolved for next season.

Record: 11-6

Last Ranking: 7

Needs Still to be Filled: LT (depth), RT (veteran depth), G (veteran depth), C (veteran depth), CB (depth), S (veteran depth)

7) Green Bay Packers: The offense is one of the best in the league. They just need to add some depth on the offensive line. The issues really are on defense. The cornerback position remains a concern.

Record: 11-6

Last Ranking: 10

Needs Still to be Filled: QB (veteran depth), G (veteran depth), DE (veteran depth), OLB (pass rushing depth), CB (veteran depth), S (depth)

8) Philadelphia Eagles: The reality of this year's team was they probably weren't as good as their record indicated. The coaches did a great job of keeping things together despite losing some key players. The quarterback position could take on an interesting look by the start of free agency.

Record: 11-6

Last Ranking: 4

Needs Still to be Filled: LT (veteran depth), C (depth), DE (veteran upgrade), SLB (upgrade), MLB (depth), CB (developmental prospect)

9) Baltimore Ravens: The key for this team to go far in the playoffs over the next few seasons is if upgrades can be made at the receiver position. They have to help Joe Flacco out as much as possible.

Record: 9-7

Last Ranking: 14

Needs Still to be Filled: WR (upgrades), G (veteran depth), ILB (veteran depth), OLB (veteran depth), S (veteran depth), CB (depth)

10) New York Jets: The key for this team is for QB Mark Sanchez to progress. The coaches have to feel better about him of late, but they have to trust him. If they have to throw more than 25 times, it's a problem. Hopefully, that will change next season when he has a year under his belt.

Record: 9-7

Last Ranking: 12

Needs Still to be Filled: WR (slot), G (veteran depth), RT (veteran depth), DE (depth), OLB (veteran depth)

11) New England Patriots: The offensive line needs to be more consistent if the offense is to get back on schedule next season. It would also help if they added a few solid options at receiver. The defense needs help in the front-seven, especially at linebacker.

Record: 10-7

Last Ranking: 8

Needs Still to be Filled: QB (veteran depth), WR (veteran depth), ILB (depth), OLB (pass rusher)

12) Cincinnati Bengals: The receiver corps either needs to be overhauled or upgrades are going to be needed. There is an alarming lack of speed at that position.

Record: 10-7

Last Ranking: 9

Needs Still to be Filled: WR (speed), RT (veteran depth), G (veteran depth), CB (veteran depth/nickel), S (depth)

13) Houston Texans: The offense is outstanding, probably one of the best. The defensive front-seven is mostly solid, but the secondary needs to be more consistent.

Record: 9-7

Last Ranking: 11

Needs Still to be Filled: G (depth), DE (veteran pass rushing depth)

14) New York Giants: The change in defensive coordinator should help, but the Giants need help in the secondary, especially at safety.

Record: 8-8

Last Ranking: 13

Needs Still to be Filled: QB (veteran depth), RT (veteran depth), G (depth), S (veteran depth upgrade)

15) Pittsburgh Steelers: The offense is fine. They just have to stick with the run a little more. The defense has major issues in the secondary. That's where Pittsburgh's offseason focus should be.

Record: 9-7

Last Ranking: 15

Needs Still to be Filled: G (veteran depth), RT (veteran depth), LT (veteran depth), C (veteran depth), OLB (depth), CB (upgrade), S (depth)

16) Denver Broncos: It's become abundantly clear that Kyle Orton isn't the answer at quarterback. He's a very limited passer. Head coach Josh McDaniels' passing game is more of vertical stretch. Orton just doesn't have the arm strength to handle that scheme.

Record: 8-8

Last Ranking: 16

Needs Still to be Filled: QB (upgrade), LT (veteran depth upgrade), G (veteran depth), C (veteran depth), CB (veteran depth), S (veteran depth)

17) San Francisco 49ersAlex Smith has shown that he can be a capable quarterback at times, but that's the problem. San Francisco must get better play out of him consistently from week to week if they are to be a winning team. They also must find a better pass rush on defense.

Record: 8-8

Last Ranking: 17

Needs Still to be Filled: QB (upgrade), G (depth), RT (veteran depth), OLB (pass rushing depth)

18) Tennessee Titans: Vince Young made major strides this season, but he fell off late. They have to get him to be more consistent from the beginning of the season. Defensively, they have to find a better pass rush.

Record: 8-8

Last Ranking: 18

Needs Still to be Filled: G (veteran depth), LT (veteran depth), RT (veteran depth), WLB (veteran depth), MLB (veteran depth), CB (veteran depth)

19) Atlanta Falcons: They have to get Matt Ryan back on schedule. It's still puzzling why he didn't play well last season after having such a good rookie campaign. For this to be a solid playoff team again, they must get help in the secondary.

Record: 9-7

Last Ranking: 19

Needs Still to be Filled: WR (depth), RT (veteran depth), G (depth), SLB (depth), MLB (depth), WLB (depth), S (veteran depth upgrade), CB (upgrade)

20) Miami Dolphins: They know who their quarterback will be for the next 7-8 years, but Chad Henne needs major help at the receiver position. The defense needs to be more consistent from week to week. That's why they made a defensive coordinator change.

Record: 7-9

Last Ranking: 20

Needs Still to be Filled: WR (upgrades), G (veteran depth), LT (veteran depth), RT (veteran depth), ILB (depth)

21) Carolina Panthers: Matt Moore did a nice job, but it remains to be seen if he'll be given a realistic shot to unseat Jake Delhomme as the starting quarterback next season. They have to figure out who the starter of the future is at that position. Major help is needed at receiver.

Record: 8-8

Last Ranking: 21

Needs Still to be Filled: QB (upgrade), WR (depth), LT (veteran depth), G (veteran depth), DT (depth), SLB (veteran depth), CB (nickel/depth)

22) Jacksonville Jaguars: Consistent quarterback play from David Garrard is a must if the offense is to stay on schedule. Depth and upgrades are needed at receiver. The biggest issues remain on defense, however. The pass rush was non-existent. It would help if they would stay with one scheme.

Record: 7-9

Last Ranking: 22

Needs Still to be Filled: WR (veteran depth), C (depth), G (depth), DE (depth), OLB (pass rushing depth), ILB (veteran depth), CB (veteran depth)

23) Chicago Bears: The Bears need major help on their offensive line. There's way too much inconsistency there. Depth remains an issue at several positions on defense.

Record: 7-9

Last Ranking: 23

Needs Still to be Filled: QB (veteran depth), RB (depth), G (depth), OT (depth), DE (depth), MLB (depth)

24) Cleveland Browns: There's a trend of the bottom teams in these rankings. Many of them need help at quarterback, and the Browns are no exception. They also could use some help at receiver. Who will their starting running back be next season? Jerome Harrison did a nice job, but he doesn't appear to be the kind of back that you can build an offense around. The defense needs help in the back end. A few pass rushers are also needed

Record: 5-11

Last Ranking: 24

Needs Still to be Filled: RB (upgrade), WR (speed), LT (depth), RT (depth), G (depth), NT (depth), ILB (veteran depth), OLB (pass rusher), CB (veteran depth), S (veteran depth)

25) Buffalo Bills: This is yet another team that has to find out who their starting quarterback will be next season. It would help if they could decide who the head coach is first. The offensive line was banged up all season, but depth became a major problem. Defensively, they have to find a better pass rush.

Record: 6-10

Last Ranking: 26

Needs Still to be Filled: QB (upgrade), WR (depth), TE (veteran depth), G (depth), RT (depth), LT (depth), WLB (upgrade/veteran depth), SLB (depth), MLB (depth)

26) Oakland Raiders: For this team to have any chance of making the playoffs next season, they have to find a quarterback who can keep the offense on schedule. Defensively, getting a consistent pass rush and better tackling against the run would help.

Record: 5-11

Last Ranking: 25

Needs Still to be Filled: QB (upgrade), G (depth), DT (depth), MLB (depth), SLB (depth), WLB (depth), CB (depth)

27) Seattle Seahawks: This team is a mess on both sides of the ball. They have an underachieving group of receivers, an aging quarterback who looked to regress, and one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL. Defensively, the secondary remains a big problem as does a suspect pass rush.

Record: 5-11

Last Ranking: 27

Needs Still to be Filled: LT (depth), RT (depth), G (depth), DE (depth), WLB (depth), CB (depth/upgrade), S (depth)

28) Washington Redskins: New head coach Mike Shanahan has his hands full. Major upgrades and depth are needed on the offensive line. He also has to decide if Jason Campbell is his quarterback next season. It sounded like in his introductory press conference that Campbell has a shot to come back. The defense should be solid and aggressive under Jim Haslett, but depth remains an issue on that side of the ball.

Record: 4-12

Last Ranking: 28

Needs Still to be Filled: G (veteran depth), LT (veteran depth), RT (veteran depth), C (depth), DE (depth), WLB (depth), SLB (depth), S (veteran depth)

29) Kansas City Chiefs: Hopefully, the coaching changes that were made recently will result in better play on both sides of the ball. But the biggest upgrades are still needed on the offensive line and in the front-seven on defense.

Record: 4-12

Last Ranking: 29

Needs Still to be Filled: LT (depth), RT (depth), G (depth), NT (depth), DE (depth), OLB (pass rushing depth), CB (veteran depth)

30) Tampa Bay Buccaneers: They have their quarterback, but depth and upgrades are needed on offense. However, the biggest issues remain on defense. The defensive line must find a better pass rush next season. Depth and upgrades are also needed in the back-seven.

Record: 3-13

Last Ranking: 30

Needs Still to be Filled: G (depth), C (depth), LT (depth), RT (depth), DT (veteran depth), DE (veteran depth), WLB (depth), SLB (depth), CB (depth/nickel), S (depth)

31) Detroit Lions: For Detroit's offense to take off next season, QB Matthew Stafford must stay healthy. It would help if the offensive line had some upgrades at a few positions. They also could use some help at running back. The defense needs depth and upgrades at several positions.

Record: 2-14

Last Ranking: 31

Needs Still to be Filled: RB (depth), LT (depth), DE (veteran depth), SLB (veteran depth), S (depth), CB (upgrade/depth)

32) St. Louis Rams: Despite their needs which we've outlined below, the Rams may not be as far from being respectable as most think. It's really about the quarterback position. Once they get that solved, the offense should be very strong. They are deep at receiver and have an improving offensive line. They already have one of the best running backs in the NFL with Steven Jackson. Defensively, they must add more pass rushers up front and help in the secondary.

Record: 1-15

Last Ranking: 32

Needs Still to be Filled: QB (upgrade), LT (veteran depth), G (depth), DT (veteran depth), DE (depth), SLB (veteran depth), WLB (veteran depth), MLB (veteran depth), CB (veteran depth), S (depth)
