All the attention in Florida is placed on quarterback Tim Tebow in this year’s draft, but the Gators have two prospects rated higher than Tebow in the draft, cornerback Joe Haden and the man who snaps Tebow the ball, center Maurkice Pouncey.
Pouncey is the No. 1 rated center by Scout.com.
Last week, it was reported by the Orlando Sentinel that Pouncey had scheduled workouts with the New York Jets, Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos, Pittsburgh Steelers and Kansas City Chiefs. Scout.com has learned that those reported workouts were actually official visits, and the scheduled visit with the Chiefs has been cancelled.
In addition to those visits with the aforementioned teams, Scout.com has also learned that Pouncey visited the New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys during the last week of March, and that he has a private workout scheduled with the Vikings on April 10th and a private visit/dinner with the Baltimore Ravens on April 15th in Gainesville.
A three-year starter at Florida, Pouncey, who teamed with his twin brother Michael to form college football’s most impressive interior barrier, decided to leave school after his junior campaign, while his brother stayed in school. Pouncey played in 41 games, making 39 starts during his three-year career at Florida, and was the best center in college football during the 2009 season, as he captured the Rimington Trophy.
At 6-foot-4, 304 pounds, Pouncey is a natural athlete who does everything really well, and some consider him to be a better prospect than last year’s top center, first round draft pick Alex Mack. The one negative to Pouncey is that he comes from a spread offense where he primarily snapped the ball out of the shotgun, and there may be an adjustment period for him to get used to the traditional style. But, if that’s the only negative, Pouncey, who also has experience at guard, will likely hear his name early in the draft, possibly as high as No. 18 to the Steelers.
Pouncey is the No. 1 rated center listed on Scout.com’s 2010 NFL Draft Rankings.
