David Carr/QB - The 49ers decided to not pursue Donovan McNabb. Instead, they signed Carr to be insurance in back of starter Alex Smith.
Karl Paymah/CB - Paymah figures to compete for playing time in a dime role and on special teams.
Shaun Hill/QB - The journeyman signal caller will compete for the No.2 job with the Detroit Lions.
Arnaz Battle/WR - The possession receiver will compete for playing time as a backup with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Tony Pashos/OT - He found a starting job at right tackle with the Cleveland Browns. Adam Snyder is the current starter at right tackle for the 49ers.
Jeff Ulbrich/LB - He decided to retire. Ulbrich was hired earlier this year as a special teams assistant by the Seattle Seahawks.
Dre' Bly/CB - Bly, who turns 33 in May, is probably one of the best cornerbacks left on the free agent market. Even so, he hasn't found much interest thus far.
Walt Harris/CB - The veteran defensive back missed all last season due to a torn ACL. He turns 36 in August and may have trouble finding a job this season.
Marcus Hudson/CB - He'll mostly play on special teams with the Carolina Panthers.
Mark Roman/S - At this point in his career, Roman figures to be a backup.
Pre-Draft Team Needs
Right Tackle - Snyder is probably a better backup than Starter. It's widely believed the team will look to select a right tackle early in this year's draft.
Cornerback - While they have decent depth at the position, the 49ers probably need an upgrade over veteran CB Shawntae Spencer.
Outside Linebacker - Ahmad Brooks was a nice surprise last season, but it's not like he can be counted on any way to be a consistent pass rusher.
Running Back - The one thing they really lack at the position is speed and lateral quickness.
