Post-Draft Review: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Gerald McCoy (Oklahoma Athletics)

The Buccaneers had to address the receiver position in order to help second-year QB Josh Freeman progress.

Pre-Draft Needs: WR, DE, CB, DT

Players Added

Round 1-Gerald McCoy/DT - McCoy will start at the "3-technique" tackle position in Tampa Bay's Cover-2 defense. McCoy plays with a high-motor and should provide an impact on their defense as a rookie.

Round 2-Brian Price/DT - Price will likely be aligned shaded off the nose (much like Jay Ratliff) since he's really not a pure nose tackle. He was seen as a high-riser within the final few months of the draft.

Round 2-Arrelious Benn/WR - Benn should challenge for a starting job as a rookie. While he doesn't run well, he has good size and solid hands. He's the kind of possession receiver who is capable of making an impact right away in a short to intermediate passing game.

Round 3-Myron Lewis/CB - Lewis is a nice-sized defensive back. He's capable of playing cornerback or safety. Because he lacks good speed, he may project to playing in a nickel role down the line or at free safety.

Round 4-Mike Williams/WR - If the talented receiver can stay out of trouble off the field, he'll have a chance to start as a rookie.

Round 6-Brent Bowen/P - After letting go of two veteran punters, this position became a need. Bowen was drafted to be the starter.

Round 7-Cody Grimm/S - He'll challenge for a roster spot as a fourth safety and on special teams.

Round 7-Dakoda Watson/LB - The undersized linebacker figures to compete for a roster spot at WLB.

Round 7-Erik Lorig/DE - If he has a strong preseason, Lorig will have a legitimate chance to make the 53-man roster because Tampa Bay is really light on talent at defensive end.

Post-Draft Needs

Wide Receiver - Even with adding two talented receivers in this draft, Tampa Bay still is light on talent at the position.

Defensive End - This position remains a major need. It's kind of surprising that it wasn't addressed. It remains to be seen how they can improve their pass rush with the players they have on their 80-man roster.

Cornerback - With starting CB Ronde Barber turning 35 last month, the team needs to find his eventual replacement. The nickel and dime positions also are issues. Recommended Stories
