Tony Pauline- TFY Draft Preview

Dec 31, 2002

Sort of a "blah" game in what is usually a competitive contest every year. TCU surprisingly ran through Conference USA, building upon the 2001 campaign even with a new quarterback. Colorado State started the year strong but fell asleep at seasons' end. A pair, maybe three, first day picks could come from this game.

Colorado State

Cecil Sapp started the year on fire, running roughshod over quality defenses and proving he is a solid interior running back fully healed from the injury that kept him on the sidelines a year ago.  He needs to run well for the clock and prove he has at least adequate hands out of the backfield if he's to be a top 75 choice next April. Morgan Pears offers a solid run blocking guard but an inability to play in space will knock him into the very late rounds.  Some team may find Henri Child to be a gem in free agency;  the versatile running back saw his carries diminished this season with the return to health of Sapp but has the skills to be a competent third down back and special teams player at the next level.

TCU

The Horned Frogs consistently sprinkle solid prospects throughout the draft and 2003 will be no different.  LaMarcus McDonald is a tackling machine that makes a lot of plays up the field while also being a solid run stuffing middle linebacker; problem is he has weak-side linebacker size but lacks the cover skills to make a move over.  Late first day is a good possibility for McDonald. John Turntine is a pass rusher getting high marks as is corner Jason Goss, who looked good all season and improved by leaps and bounds.  Goss could surprise on draft day.
