| PRO: When quarterback Vince Young played in the February 2007 Pro Bowl, it capped a 13-month span in which he led the University of Texas Longhorns to a National Championship, became the third overall selection in the NFL Draft, earned an 8-5 record as a starter in his first NFL season and was named Associated Press NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. The experiences Young amassed prior to his 24th birthday are cause for much of the optimism surrounding the still-youthful Tennessee Titans. Despite his age, Young demonstrated the leadership of a veteran in his first season, and with the concurrent development of other offensive playmakers, the Titans are hopeful of following Young to an elite level.
By the time the 2006 season ended, the 6-foot-5, 233-pound signal caller was the owner of virtually every rookie passing record for the franchise, including passing totals of 2,199 yards and 12 touchdowns. Additionally, he gained 552 yards on the ground, becoming the first quarterback in the Super Bowl era (1966-present) to rush for 500 yards as a rookie. He scored seven rushing touchdowns, also a first for a rookie quarterback in the Super Bowl era. Young became the first rookie in league history to record three touchdown passes of 20 yards or longer (Young totaled five) and three rushing touchdowns of 20 yards or longer (Young totaled four). After playing as a back-up in two of Tennessee’s first three games of 2006, Young emerged as a starter in Week 4 (10/1) and started the remainder of the season. His eight wins marked the fifth-highest total by a rookie quarterback since 1970 NFL-AFL merger, and he directed a six-game winning streak that was the third-longest by a rookie quarterback since the merger. Since 1960, 57 rookie quarterbacks have started more than half of their team’s games, and Young is only the 10th member of that group to have a winning record. Young directed six fourth-quarter comebacks in his time at Texas, including his signature Rose Bowl performance against the University of Southern California in the BCS Championship Game, and as a rookie he provided evidence to suggest his flair for the dramatic and ability to perform under duress carried through from college to the NFL. He led the Titans to five victories in which the Titans trailed or were tied in the fourth quarter. In consecutive weeks, the team erased significant deficits against the New York Giants (11/26) and Indianapolis Colts (12/3) to win the game. Against the Giants, they trailed 21-0 in the fourth quarter before coming back to win 24-21. The Colts jumped out to a 14-0 lead and a 14-10 fourth-quarter lead only to be defeated at the hands of Young and the Titans by a final score of 20-17. The comeback in the Giants game was the greatest in league history by a rookie quarterback, and in those two weeks Young became the first quarterback in league history to achieve two comebacks of 14 points or more in his rookie season. The following week at Houston (12/10), he won the game in overtime with a 39-yard touchdown run.
When Young was added to the AFC Pro Bowl roster, he became the first rookie quarterback since Dan Marino in 1983 to make the team. Young was the first rookie to play in the game, as Marino sat out due to injury.
