| Biography: |
| PRO: The Tennessee Titans signed cornerback Kelly Herndon as a free agent on June 11, 2007, adding a starting-caliber veteran to the defensive backfield. Herndon has completed a total of five NFL seasons, including three campaigns with the Denver Broncos and the past two seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. In 73 career regular season games, he has made 49 starts and produced 278 tackles, nine interceptions, seven forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and one sack. Regarded as a versatile and physical defender, he will compete in Tennessee for playing time outside at cornerback and inside as a nickel back. In 2006, Herndon started all 16 regular season games at cornerback for the NFC West Division Champion Seahawks. He tallied 68 tackles, 16 passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He injured his left ankle in the regular season finale and was placed on injured reserve prior to the postseason. Prior to his arrival in Tennessee, Herndon was a member of four consecutive playoff teams – two with Denver and two with Seattle. In five postseason games, he has recorded two starts, 12 tackles and two interceptions, including a Super Bowl record 76-yard interception return against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XL. Upon entering the NFL, Herndon served stints with the San Francisco 49ers (April 23-September 5, 1999; July 7-August 27, 2000) and New York Giants (May 15-September 2, 2001) before landing on the Giants’ practice squad at the start of the 2001 season (September 4-September 18, 2001). He was then signed to the Broncos’ practice squad (October 24, 2001), where he finished the remainder of the 2001 season. In 2002 he made the Broncos’ 53-man roster for the first time, seeing action primarily on special teams. He was a starter in Denver’s secondary for the majority of the 2003 and 2004 seasons and then was signed by Seattle as a restricted free agent on March 25, 2005. He was released by the Seahawks on June 1, 2007. Herndon originally was signed by the 49ers as a rookie free agent on April 23, 1999.
TITANS TIDBITS:
• Although he entered his first NFL camp in 1999, Herndon waited until 2002 to play in his first NFL game. The wait included two training camps with the 49ers, one with the Giants, two regular seasons out of football, a spring in Barcelona with NFL Europe and one season serving on the Giants’ and Broncos’ practice squads.
• Not only did Herndon face professional obstacles making a name for himself in the NFL, he also faced his share of personal adversity in his first few years in the league. His father, Robert Herndon, passed away after a seizure around the time of Kelly’s first NFL minicamp. Kelly says that prior to his passing, his father provided him and his brothers the foundation to succeed in athletics and in life. Then a few years later, during 2003 training camp, his first cousin, Charles Herndon II, died in a tragic car accident. Charles, an ordained minister, and Kelly were so close they considered themselves brothers. Just a few weeks later after the Broncos’ regular season opening victory at Cincinnati, Kelly was given a game ball for intercepting a pass, forcing a fumble on a kickoff return and totaling three tackles. He would later present the game ball to his uncle, Charles Herndon I.
• In Twinsburg, Ohio (population approx. 17,000), a small town about 45 minutes from Canton, there is a sign that reads, "Home of NFL Player Kelly Herndon." The sign was erect |
