| OVERVIEW: A candidate for the Heisman Trophy in 2009, Spiller is one of the top all-aroound football players in the nation, he has been a record setter at Clemson as a running back, a receiver and a kick returner. Spiller has even thrown a touchdown pass. Already Clemson's all-time leader in career all-purpose yards with 4908, Spiller needs just 921 to become the all-time leader in ACC history, he is third among active players nationally in that category. He is also the first-team All-ACC for 2008 after making the Dean's List in the first semester of 2008. He is the first Clemson running back to make All-ACC on the field and in the classroom in the same semester. Spiller has a school-record 12 touchdowns of 50 yards or more in his career, including seven of at least 80 yards. He is 21st in the nation in all-purpose yards per game, 14th in the nation in kickoff returns (27.2), in 2008. He, perhaps, is the best all-around player in the ACC; he is first in all-purpose yards, second in kickoff returns, second in punt returns (9.1), third in touchdowns (11), and also 14th in the ACC in receptions and 16th in reception yards. Spiller is second among ACC running backs in catches per game and perhaps the top receiving running back in the ACC; had 34 catches for 436 yards and three touchdowns; led ACC running backs in receiving yards; the total is also a Clemson single-season record. He joined an elite list when he threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Grisham at Virginia, a play thatwas the only touchdown of the game; it was his first career pass and the first Tiger running back to throw a touchdown pass since 1989. Spiller has 20 rushing touchdowns, seven receiving touchdowns, and three touchdowns on kickoff returns in his career. He has 87 career catches for 917 yards and seven touchdowns, since coming back from a mid-season hamstring injury, he was on a roll; he averaged 173 all-purpose yards per game in the last six games, helping Clemson to a 4-2 record; he had four games with at least 185 all-purpose yards in that time; averaged 9.1 yards every time he has touched the ball over that time. Spiller was named offensive player-of-the-week three times and special teams player twice for five total selections, tied for the most last season. He is the winner of the "Leather Helmet Award" and was ACC Offensive Back-of-the-Week; also won that award against Duke when he had 201 all-purpose yards. He has a 6.0 career rushing average, has had eight career 100-yard rushing games and two career 100-yard receiving games. Spiller had a 96-yard kickoff return for a score against #24 Alabama, had a season-high 98 yards against Maryland, and had 88 yards against South Carolina. Spiller has missed only one game in his career (Georgia Tech, 2008). |
